December 2007| The system of wilderness protection of Belarus needs to be radically reformed
Heorhi Kazulka, Ecological bulletin "Green Space", No 1 The paper discuss the system of wilderness protection in Belarus which needs to be radically reformed. Belarusian national parks are not nature protection institutions and demonstrate a catastrophe. Today the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" is an institution which is not less secret and restricted if compared with any military strategic object. First of all, we need to get publicity and democracy in Belarus. It is indifferent attitude of the majority of Belarusian population to natural values and sanctities. In our country the role of NGOs is scanty. As to problems of the EPNTs, the most of them are just connected to infringement or non-fulfillment of legislation's requirements by authorities.
December 31, 2009| In the atmosphere of the 600th anniversary
"Belorusskaya Lesnaya Gazeta" (The Belarusian Forest Newspaper) newspaper, No 53) this year passed in the atmosphere of the 600th anniversary both in the world and in the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha". The President of our country in his speech on the celebration of the 600th anniversary of establishing the reserved status in Belovezhskaya Pushcha has called this natural site as a pure and great forest of Europe and as a greatest property and pride of the Belarusian people. The celebrating was really held at the international level. The main confirmation of this statement is the fact that 2009 was announced by UNESCO a Belovezhskaya Pushcha's Year. Our today's conversation with Nikolai Bambiza, director general of the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha", is about the year leaving us and plans for the future. December 29, 2009| How protected sites of the Pripyat River are destroyed
Inessa Zenina, "Belarusian Green Portal" 13 years have passed since the date of reorganization of the Pripyatskiy Landscape and Hydrological Reserve into a national park. This event has not only made free for those wishing to sell the national property but also became a step for liquidation of all protected system in Belarus. The reserve or national park? Alena Yasko, "Narodnaya Gazeta" (The People's Newspaper) newspaper, No 247 If Father Frost and Show Maiden did not knock at your door for a long time, let knock ourselves at their fantastic gate. Certainly, our most important Father Frost lives in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Let's visit Zyuzya? Wonders are everywhere. But deer are better! December 24, 2009| Bison Under threat
"Belarusian Partisan" The practice of the so-called "selective" shooting for bison threatens to put this "red-listed" species of fauna of Belarus on the verge of extinction. However, it alarms neither those who obtain the profit from hunting, nor hunters. The program "Bison". A selective murder. A national symbol. The number is unknown. A president's answer. To redeem fault. Use a special (web)software (for example, "Translate-Google") to translate the text or read it more in Russian http://bp21.org.by/ru/art/a091224.html
December 21, 2009| A power site
Vyacheslav Semakov, "Zarya" (The Dawn) Newspaper There are sites on the Earth which have a strange and attractive power. Having apparently simplicity and availability, they are wrapped in aura of mystery and inaccessibility. The places of power draw the people. If to proceed from this idea, Belovezhskaya Pushcha can be realistically attributed to "sites of power". However Belovezhskaya Pushcha can be considered the truly "site of power" from the ecological point of view. Kamil Tangalychev, "Eurasia" Painting the native nature, great Russian artists strengthen the historical bases of our sovereign space. 120 years back Ivan Shishkin has painted a picture "Morning in a pine wood". The anniversary of the outstanding picture reminds to us that it is necessary to love Fatherland and to tremble for it at lest because only it will sweep away dust and fallen foliage from a perhaps anonymous gravestone. When Shishkin has met with Alexander III at an exhibition, the Tsar has made him for drawing the Belovezhskaya Pushcha's grove. It is thought that the Tsar Alexander has made for painting not so much the Belovezhskaya grove as the image of the power. December 14, 2009| Hard cross for Nikolai Cherkas
Alexander Kovalchuk, "Narodnaya Volya" (The People's Will) Newspaper After the creative triumph is getting the dismissal with eviction. 2009 is rich concerning intricate turns of the destiny for Nikolai Cherkas, PhD of Biology of Biology, 46. On the one hand, there is the sounded success at the national and international levels. On the other hand, it is the complete collapse at the basic job place, in the State Nature Protection Establishment "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha", which was ended in a notification on eviction. In other country he could be at the top of acknowledgement while in Belarus he is under attempt to become a social outcast. December 11, 2009| Trees can save us
Benno Hansen, website "climatechange.thinkaboutit.eu" The core lesson is: Plants are the key to the climate crisis. Economic models that tries to add the value of forests into the equation repeatedly turn out numbers that dwarf the recent financial crisis when estimating the costs of deforestation. Because forests serve so many purposes: desertification control, gene pool, carbon sequestration, humus production, water purification, building materials etc, etc. Bialowieza. I recently travelled to the Polish Bialowieza National Park which is a temperate forest. I'd read about the dropping ground water level there resulting in a decline in the number of spruce trees. According to permaculture, now we need to plant 10,000 trees each! December 10, 2009| A typewriter used to print an agreement about the USSR liquidation was sold for scrap metal
Olga Shestakova, "Komsomolskaya Pravda" (The Komsomolskaya Truth) newspaper This week the next sad anniversary - 18 years since the date of disintegration of the USSR - has passed almost unnoticed. Heads of Byelorussia, Russia and Ukraine have signed in Belovezhskaya Pushcha a verdict for the Soviet empire on December 8, 1991. It seems everything what is possible has been told about events of those days. However, we have found stories which never and nowhere sounded. "Conveyor was there one thing has been typed, others have been retyped". There were going to throw out the type-relic. Elizaveta Perepechenko, "Elizaveta Perepechenko's LiveJournal") A few generations of my ancestors honourly worked for the boon of Fatherland to be active in various fields. All of them, irrespective of grades and ranks, were the worthy people who never let fall honour and always were hold in respect of people surrounding them. However, at once after the 1917 October revolution which ruined our country their work and honesty, knowledge and abilities of became unnecessary and they were announced "alien class elements". I believe, like all of them, that my first and most important imperative is to return from non-existence the names of the ancestors worthy respect and memory. I began, actually, "from zero" and already got to the "bottom", to the early XVIII century. Dmitry, the Yakov's son, in February, was appointed a post of scientific forester of the Grodno Chamber of the State Property (in Belovezhskaya Pushcha) in 1842. He was an initiator of researches in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. In particular, he was engaged in domesticating bison since 1846. He got popularity in the scientific world as the authoritative researcher on Belovezhskaya Pushcha's bison. He was elected a Full Member of the Russian Geographical Society for works on the natural history of this animal - "Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the bison history" - in 1848, and has gained a gold medal from the London Zoological Society. Adam Maldis, "Sovetskaya Belorussia" (The Soviet Byelorussia) newspaper Belovezhskaya Pushcha like a bison living there for centuries, and "The Song about Bison" by Mikolaj Hussowczyk, already became the most cognate visit-card of Belarus all over the world. Come here and contemplate all surroundings in silence which is appreciated very much in the modern noisy world. Quench your nostalgia for the irrevocably lost calmness and enjoy the primordial beauty of the oldest European forest! What's more? However, it appears that tourists do not hurry to enjoy. Why? There are three reasons, in my opinion. Ludmila Buneeva "Vecherniy Brest" (The Evening Brest) newspaper Why do the people talk with the Podliassie accent in a village of the Drogichin district. Resurrection of the history of the Gnilets village situated near Khomsk can be mentioned as one of the results of the expedition. If closely to peer at a map of the western part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha of the XX century (today is the territory of Poland), we can see on it inhabited localities which do not exist today. For example, it is the village of Gnilets. On transition from ղ to centuries imperial officials have decided to move some small local villages within the frame of the program of forestry regulating in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. The villages of Gnilets and Nemerzha have got under this decision. Nikolai Cherkas, "Severnye Zemli" Since time of the first hunting of Russian Tsar Alexander II in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in October of 1860 this pastime became traditional there. The Tsar Alexander III has decided to build a hunting palace at the core of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, in the village of Bialowieza. At the time of emancipation from German fascist invaders, in the night between 16 and July 17 of 1944, the palace has take fire because of military actions. After the war there was discussed for a long time what to do with the palace? The final decision has been accepted in 1958 - to blow up. Later new hotels, houses for hunters and museums have been constricted in Pushcha but it will be hardly possible an to create the architectural product in the future similar to the palace. About the National Park "Pripyatskiy"
Valentina Mokhor "Sovetskaya Belorussia" (The Soviet Byelorussia) newspaper I can assume that the representation for the most of my countrymen about protected areas was limiting till recently by Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the Naroch land. On the one hand, it is clear the Pripyatskiy National Park is still too young as being only 40. It could turn from the conditionally restricted territory without any infrastructure to the advanced eco-tourism centre only for the last 15 years. It is a corner of the European nature which has no analogues in the world! It was glad that "Pripyatskiy" is close on the heels of Belovezhskaya Pushcha with the popularity. But bitterness of disappointment is mixed to this joyful feeling what is about us? We live and we often do not know what we have close by. And then we are surprised and we stiffen with astonishment to be spacing out. To know sites is only what necessary. Native sites! LiveJournal "arch_heritage" A big palace which was located in the centre of Europe is nearly completely deleted from the history, including the history of architecture. Now it is the territory of Poland, whereas at the end of 19-s century it was the western parts of the huge Russian Empire. The Emperor II liked to visit the Belovezhskaya forests for hunting. Then for his son who has inherited the fatherly affection to these sites, the capacious palace with a complete set of services and economic infrastructure was constructed. After the next repartition of the borders, the western part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha with the palace has remained in possession of Poles who have blown up the tumbledown palace of the Russian kings in 1958. Tatiana Dobysh, "Belorusskaya Lesnaya Gazeta" (The Belarusian Forest Newspaper) newspaper, No 48 There is a natural monument in Belarus which is considered for a long time and by right as one of the oldest and most titled reserves in the world Belovezhskaya Pushcha, the unique natural site of the international importance. Pushcha is mysterious, much known and still absolutely unknown. This is the region which connects the richest historical and cultural heritage of our people. Employees of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus greatly contribute to the study of this heritage. Today Alexander Kovalenya, director of the Institute of History, and Vadim Lakiza, head of the Section of Primitive Society of the Institute, are my interlocutors. The historical heritage. Ekaterina Polgueva, Website "Website of the Embassy of the Republic of Belarus in Russian Federation" Last week Russian journalists have again visited Byelorussia. During almost twenty years the name of Belovezhskaya Pushcha is associated for many people with the official end of the Soviet Union - our common native land. When find yourself in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, it is much felt injustice of such associations. The vivifying and creative beginning is especially felt there. And it is appreciated that Belovezhskaya Pushcha became one of the main symbols of the Republic of Belarus for some important reason. The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" is a unique area. Every time coming in Byelorussia, I do not cease to be surprised at he question how it turns out that the life in this objectively rather poor country practically deprived of the own energy supply differs so much from our Russia which is extremely rich in natural resources. However, the answer probably is not very complicated. Eugeni Kononovich, "Narodnaya Gazeta" (The People's Newspaper) newspaper Aiming on results, command spirit, discipline and responsibility have helped the collective of the open joint-stock company "Belovezhskiy" confidently to step into the world of the market relations. There are no those in the Brest land and, perhaps, all over Belarus who did not hear about "Belovezhskiy". A kind people's rumour about the rich enterprise, the comfortable village life and the advanced director is going for many years. Alexei Tretiakov, "Krasniy Sever", No 133) Belarusian Father Frost has congratulated his Russian colleague on happy birthday. This congratulation was written down last week in Belovezhskaya Pushcha where Belarusian Father Frost met a delegation of Russian journalists in his manor. "The Belarusian Father Frost's manor" was constructed in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in 2003 under the order of the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. The main objective of the project was to attract tourists. Earlier a nursery for bison which glorified Belovezhskaya Pushcha in the whole world was at the site of the today's manor. Belarusian skilled craftsmen have transformed the nursery and the adjacent area of 15 hectares into the true empire of the winter wizard. November 18, 2009| A breached memory
Elena Tribuleva, "Vecherniy Brest" (The Evening Brest) newspaper A demounted monument for the lost machine gunner has been returned from a backyard of the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" to its permanent place. Many of residents of the Kamenyuki village cannot precisely say when this monument has disappeared from its permanent location for 34 years. During the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the reserve status of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, no one saw a sculpture of a soldier with a machine gun like being in his last fight which was placed in front of the former nature museum's building, now reconstructed for a restaurant. According to the official version, the administration of the national park has given a command to dismantle the monument for the period of preparation works that to return it then to the location. There is also the informal version - the monument for Soviet warriors "was not blended" with the new shape of the reconstructed area behind an entrance gate and it was removed that do not spoil the general view. The monument has been returned to the place only in the last days off, after the regional authorities, military commissariat and regional office of public prosecutor have become interested in its disappearance. It is probably to Alexandra Nikolaevna, local residents have guessed straight off. At first it is to visit guards. Nikolai Dobronravov, his husband, opened the door. The person celebrating her jubilee also appeared. She was the tiny and fragile woman in a home dressing gown and slippers it is not believed that she is today 80! Boris Lepeshko, "Vecherniy Brest" (The Evening Brest) newspaper I have bought a book about Belovezhskaya Pushcha written in connection with the anniversary. There are two authors, the Belarusian one Vyacheslav Semakov, a remarkable researcher who recently passed away, and the German one Valery Ripperger. The book is called "A Primeval Forest's Dream". It was already issued in Germany and the time has come to print it here. The book is good with illustrations, using rare documents, spectrum of expert opinions on the very different local processes and with the context which is rather wider than the pure "forestry" or ecological approach. Nevertheless, this book has an essential lack it is mainly of the German mind, instead of the Belarusian one. For example, as the formal attribute, it is narrated like about our Belovezhskaya Pushcha but Belarus is not enough there. Germans perceive Pushcha in terms of their intimacy and the book's name is not casual. The story about a trip to Byelorussia, to the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha"
"TURIZM_RU") It was initially planned to visit the Hatyn Memorial, Brest, Bobruisk and, probably, Belovezhskaya Pushcha. But Pushcha became the core of the program. We were inexpressibly lucky in the administrative center Kamenyuki. First of all we visited the Tsar Glade where local holidays pass now. We were surprised and confused a bit about the fact that hunting for animals is permitted, although under license. In any way, that is the national park But we were confused much more after we saw fresh cutting areas on which foresters burnt heaps of branches and wood residuals. The Administration of Affairs of the President rules all businesses of the national park. The park's director, President Lukashenko's man, is a very amusing figure, although it is rather to tell with tears about his businesses, not with laughter. He is simultaneously god, king and law for residents of the national park, but it really looks like full ignoring of the law. Rumble of hunting horns, shouts of beaters and echo of gun shots - all of these nightmares, I want to believe, are already for ever in the past here. "For all years of my presidency I never have afforded to myself to enter in Belovezhskaya Pushcha with a gun. I demand the same from others top-officials", these words said by Alexander Lukashenko during the celebration meeting on the 600th anniversary of the strictly protected status in Belovezhskaya Pushcha were poured like the balm on wounds of the relic forest. And these wounds are deep. Thus, the present authority is the first for many centuries who publicly has refused extermination of the strictly protected world. The descendants I believe will properly appreciate this. The same also concerns the decision that it is necessary to forbid the car entrance to Belovezhskaya Pushcha in the near future. Grigoriy Revzin, "Komersant" (The Merchant) newspaper, No 171 An exhibition "The last days of the Romanov's tsar family. Photos by Pier Zhiliar" is open in the Historical Museum. There are amateur pictures by the Romanov's family tutor. The exhibition has about 30 small pictures made in the period between 1914 and 1917. Pier Zhiliar, Swiss, was a French-teacher for the daughters of Nicolai II and Alexei son's tutor. The attitude to an exhibition shows nearly public excitement. Zhiliar has the own theme which creates a certain inversion of the topic. He photographed private events of the family's life. Website "News OPEN.BY" The Belarusian government has put a task to increase the export of distillery products 30 times more in 2010. The idea to extenuate the crisis by vodka export is tempting and even realistic, the head of the analytical centre "Strategy" Leonid Zaiko is convinced of it. The Petr Matveevich's recipe the alcoholic drink on the basis of cereals or potato - absolutely correlates to the official definition of vodka authorized by the European Parliament two years ago. But the Belarusian law permits to use moonshine only for the ethnographic purposes and only in two places - in the estate Dudutki near Minsk and in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. September 14, 2009| A man in the ecosystem
Heorhi Kazulka, Tal Asher, Web-newspaper "The United World") The conditions for the human life have substantially turned to the worse for the last 50 years. And this tendency only accrues. It is not necessary today to be the expert in ecology that to prove the ecological precipice, the future ecological catastrophe to which the humanity goes. It is even not necessary to have the higher education to do this. It is enough to see and estimate how and what speed is for changes in the volume of separate natural resources or in separate territories on the planet Earth for the last hundred or fifty years. It is enough to put the examples of ecological disasters in the countries of the former USSR, such as death of the Aral Sea, the Chernobyl accident, Semipalatinsk polygon, degradation of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and pollution of the Volga River basin. Limits of the growth. What is bad in production of the more perfect pie? How to make the correct account? Synchronization with the ecosystem. The radical reorganization of consciousness of the maximum plenty of the people is necessary that the altruistic relations have begun to prevail in the society. The comprehension and acceptance of the simple and at the same time unusual, even paradoxical for someone truth is necessary - the way of only intelligence and science is the deadlock way. Igor Pastukhov, Website "Wild Nature" An author puts a question in this article he concludes the majority of natural territories which are under special protection, protected areas for special purposes first of all, are not really especially protected objects. The protected areas for special purposes dont have strictly protected cores, in difference with national parks. There are a number of serious problems because trees are cut down within their borders. Relic pines of Belovezhskaya Pushcha which are 300 years, flood-valley oaks of the Pripiat River and pine woods of the "Red Pine Wood" are also felled without reason. Elena Tribuleva, "Vecherniy Brest" (The Evening Brest) newspaper Armory, as a rule, are known only in rather narrow sections of the public. However, Victor, your name as an author of the arms of Belovezhskaya Pushcha has sounded in this summer from pages practically of all Belarusian mass-medias. - Let's only specify: Maria Elinskaya, member of the Heraldic Council, is the author of the project of symbolism of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and its heraldic service. An art decision belongs to me, while my main assistant and wife Svetlana executed the work on a vector diagram. Since Belovezhskaya Pushcha initially had the arms, why should we now be limited in the emblem? The historical arms of the Reserve which we know is more likely the Romanov's one on a background of Belovezhskaya Pushcha. And this forest as a strict reserve, by the way, is not 100 years, and not even 200. It is 600. So, we consequently should take into account and follow this historical resource. August 05, 2009| Problems of protection of wolves in Poland
Sabina Novak, Robert Myshlaek, Website "The Kiev Ecological and Cultural Center") For many years wolf was considered as a wrecker and was unadvisedly annihilated everywhere it occurred. Except for dynamical development of scientific investigations, a significant number of special projects which purpose was to study the ecology of this species were carried out in Europe before the early eightieth of the last century. Their further development has resulted in a substantiation of changes in the knowledge about the role of this predator in forest ecosystems and entering it into lists of protected animals in many countries of Western Europe. It is a pity only that wolf lives in natural conditions only in a few of these countries. At the same time this species is till now considered as the wrecker a riori in the east of Europe. The animal is not the subject for protection in many countries even for a short period critical for brining up cubs. In Poland researches on this predator are carried out during about 20 years both on plains (first of all in the Bialowieza Forest and Warminsko-Mazurski Lake-Land) and in mountains (Besczady, Beskid Szlyaskiy and Ziweckiy). Their results are published in prestigious scientific magazines and make a significant volume of data on the ecology of wolf. Tatiana Dobysh, "Belorusskaya Lesnaya Gazeta" (The Belarusian Forest Newspaper) newspaper, No 26 According to a legend based on a historical fact, it was the year 1409 that saw the Belovezhskaya Pushcha becomes a nature reserve. The event served as the starting point in the acquisition of its special status by the Pushcha. It took centuries for man to realize just how fragile Earths nature was. Even after the 600 years, the history of the forest reserve goes on. The national parks central estate, the village of Kamenyuki, is effectively going through a revival. The Belovezhskaya Pushcha is offering visitors more services each new tourist season. It is the Pushcha, as a world heritage site, as a biosphere reserve, that should be the center for environmental expertise and environmentally friendly methods of managing the neighboring territories. The management has very serious plans to develop agriculture in the national park. The Belovezhskaya Pushcha is entering a higher phase of development and formation as it prepares to celebrate its 600th birthday. There is the much more important task - this is the risen of the subsoil water-level to preserve an exotic shape and a variety of the woodland. At this point you should think a little why Pushcha is precisely 600 and what was here before this date. Did hunting of lords and, later, Soviet state's leaders do any harm to Pushcha? No, it didnt, hunting of lords and high-ranking persons favoured the preservation of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, its flora and fauna. The Pushcha's progress has got an unusually impulse when the Pushcha has passed within jurisdiction of the Administrative Office of the President of the Republic of Belarus. Vyacheslav Semakov, "Belorusskaya Lesnaya Gazeta" (The Belarusian Forest Newspaper) newspaper Foreign species in Belovezhskaya Pushcha

There is a term "introduction" in biology. It is when new species, not native in the area before, are entered to the local fauna and flora. From the point of view of nature, this is an infringement of the natural balance that quite often results in the most unexpected consequences. However, the human nature is that he would like by all means to be convinced in the originality of his thoughts, even if of adventurous in essence. Belovezhskaya Pushcha with its communities of animals and plants developed within the centuries which have brought world popularity to this forest could not escape this lot either. One of the first attempts to introduce new species in its nature was made in 1860. Read more in Rusian or use a special (web)software to translate the text http://bp21.org.by/ru/art/a090521.html

I have liked Zoya and Yuriy Nelepovichi, owners of the farmstead "Kalinka" from the village of Chernavchitsy of the Brest region, already at that time when the rural tourism was only in the start point in Belarus. Eugenia Nazarets, Website "Liberty Life Radio" The Ministry of Forestry together with the Ministry of Nature Protection are developed changes in the rules which provide hunting inside big fenced areas from hunting towers. The use of arbalests and bows, a metal dart weapon forbidden in Belarus earlier, is also under the changes to be allowed. Ecologists and environmentalists declare that in this case it is appropriate talking about extermination of the animals for commercial interest of the state and this is the way in which Belarus plans to attract foreign hunters as well. Valeriy Dranchuk says "Where will this hunting practise? It is in the so-called dens of iniquity Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Berezinski Biosphere Reserve, Pripyatskiy National Park... Dear Vasiliy Borisovich, kind words about Byelorussia from the people visited the neighbour-country are heard more and more often. Tourists are growing in the number. How can you explain it?
The Republic of Belarus is one of the popular directions for the Russian travellers. Untouched nature makes the value number 1 of our country. Belarus hosts the virgin forest which was not changed by the man, the only in the Central Europe. This is the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha". March 09, 2009| Belarusian protected areas to reduce in the size up to the level of 2000 last year
Inessa Zenina, Website "Belarusian Green Portal" In 2008 especially protected natural areas (EPNA) of the Republic of Belarus were reduced in the size up to the minimum to consider the last eight years. In other words, the protected areas in Belarus were reduced in the size up to the level of 2000. Since Belarus has got sovereignty, there was created no one reserve as the area of a maximum category of protection. "The Optimum Territorial Scheme for Especially Protected Natural Areas in the Republic of Belarus for 2006 to 2015" basically provides creation of the EPNA planned as long as before 2005. In Belarus neither new reserves (the maximum category of protection for the EPNA), nor national parks are not in the near plans! It is hardly lawful to say that the realization of the "The Optimum Territorial Scheme" will result in the ecological balance between the economically exploited and protected natural areas till 2015. February 26, 2009| Europe's bison: prehistoric survivor with Achilles' heel
Ursula Hyzy, Website "FRANCE 24" As if straight out of prehistory, dozens of bison emerge timidly from the dark trunks of a primeval forest, their imposing bulk masking their vulnerability. Step by step, the huge beasts with their thick hides enter a clearing where foresters have served up a tonne of hay and sugar beets to supplement their winter diet. About 800 bison live freely in the vast Bialowieza forest, the final remnant of a massive woodland that covered Europe after the last Ice Age, which ended about 10,000 years ago. The forest spans the Polish-Belarussian border, with some 450 bison living on the Polish side. These cousins of the North American buffalo have miraculously survived repeated peril. The 700 animals that lived in the Bialowieza forest prior to Word War I were wiped out by German soldiers and local poachers. The species was saved from extinction thanks to seven captive animals -- though there is an Achilles' heel.
February 23, 2009| Genocide towards wolves and their protection in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine
Vladimir Boreiko, Website "The Kiev Ecological and Cultural Center" The bloody extermination was the common practice in the Soviet Union and was a part of the general system of terror as a universal Stalin's tool to break through any political, social or economic task. The concept that the wolf is the harm species was accepted a priori avoiding any proofs. According to the most conservative estimations, over 1.5 million wolves were exterminated in the former USSR during 70 years. Wolves were unfairly accused of many troubles of the hunting and farming economy, as well as of elementary human larceny and embezzlement of public funds. Russia, Belarus and Ukraine are big parts of the former USSR where this barbarous tradition proceeds. These three countries are the last European countries where the wolf as before is considered outlawed. This approach is explained first of all by the traditional retaliatory mentality of the population. The barbarous extermination of the wolves is the national shame of these countries. The problem is only that Belarus is still little known as the country in the world. To get popular, we just have to present ourselves as the territory at the centre of Europe where the wild nature was saved virgin.
