So, let's investigate from whence has our Grandfather Frost appeared! Originally he was a malicious and cruel pagan deity, Great North Old Man, sovereign of cold and snowstorm freezing the people. That has found reflection in the Nekrasov's poem "Frost-Red Nose". This image was finally made out in USSR - Grandfather Frost became a symbol of New Year's holiday which as a part of the atheistic ideology has replaced the most liked (especially by children) Christmas holiday in pre-revolutionary Russia. Great Ustug is a native land of Grandfather Frost. There are Grandfather Frost's colleagues. In some Slavic countries, apart from historical winter folklore characters, there are interpretations of the image of Grandfather Frost. For example, there is Grandfather Frost with his residence in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in Belarus, apart from Zyuzya. A monument to perished defenders of their homeland stands before the entrance to Belovezhskaya Pushcha. On June the 27th, 1941, three Soviet soldiers stood up to a Nazi company in Pushcha’s Quarter 612. They fought so hard and with such courage for the Soviet Union that the surviving German soldiers gave them a ceremonial burial in homage to their feat of arms. Exactly fifty years later, three soldiers of politics found themselves in Quarter 685 positioned right next to Quarter 612 in the grid: Stanislav Shushkevich, D.Eng.; Leonid Kravchuk, Ph.D. in Economy; and structural engineer Boris Yeltsin. What they did was contrary to what had happened 50 years before. Why did all happen in Belovezhskaya Pushcha? Why was all as quick and unexpected as it was told about "secret collusion behind the Mikhail Gorbachev's back"? There was actually no any secret. The special services guarded the governmental residence Viskuli and regularly reported the USSR President about all happened. November 19, 2008| The European Bison by effanga, website "Scienceray.com"
The European bison (Bison Bonasus), sometimes known as the wisent, originally inhabited most of the European continent in great numbers. In the 16th century, polish kings took steps to protect the species. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were an estimated 2900 European bison globally. But this does not mean that the European Bison is out of danger. For these reasons, the european bison is still on the red list, which catalogs endangered plants andanimals worldwide. Man's determination to preserve this species has helped it to survive to our time. Dr. Krasinski remind us however that 'the fate of the European bison provides an example of how a species could be brought to the brink of extinction in a very short time and then save by great efforts.

When something extraordinary happens, surprised Belarusians say a phrase "You don't say so! In Belovezhskaya Pushcha, probably, a bison has died …". The untimely death of the rare European bison is surprising for the Belarusian as much as could be compared with inadequate behaviour of a crawfish which whistles on a Russian mountain. The result of preparation to the celebration of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha's 600th anniversary is that children lost their tourist base. The previous title is no more there and a new one is not created yet. Next year the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" is celebrating the 600th anniversary since first nature. The plan of activities to prepare to this holiday was approved by The Council of Ministers and its realization will require 60 mrd Belarusian rumbles (currently around $28 million). The scope of works is huge, time is short, and interest of other people is not taken into account because of chaos. We are meanwhile speaking about children. This autumn they were deprived of the tourist base in the village of Dmitrovichi where regional center of tourism and local lore study was earlier. By our sources of information the builders who will construct new premises to the future 600th anniversary will live there.

Preparation works for celebration the 600th anniversary since first nature protection status has left children without a camp site. The former signboard on the building of the former camp site is already absent whereas the new one has not appeared yet. Next year the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" will celebrate the 600th anniversary since establishment of the protected status. The plan of measures on preparation for celebration of this date was approved by the Council of Ministers' decision. Over 60 billion Belarusian rubles (currently around $28 million) are planned to invest for its realization. The volume of works is big, whereas time is very limited. So, no one does pay attention to infringements of interests of other persons and subjects which are possible in such the cases of chaos. Meanwhile, the matter concerns the children. Mat Schulz goes hunting for the endangered bison in a primeval corner of Poland. For most people, Poland is connected with images of factories, coalmines and shipyards. But between the industrial landscapes there are mountains, lakes and sea. Most surprisingly, on the border with Belarus, Poland also has mainland Europe's last primeval forest - 8000 years old and 1250 square kilometres in size. The Bialowieza Forest still exists because Polish and Lithuanian royalty used it for hunting from the 14th century. When, in the 19th century, the land became part of Russia, the tsar reserved it for the same purpose. Today the heart of the tourist park next to the forest is located on the site where the tsar's palace stood until World War II, when the Nazis destroyed it. The article describes that the celebration of the 600th anniversary since first nature protection in Belovezhskaya Pushcha planned in 2009 can be turned to the next grandiose international scandal and shine to the National Park. Its full-dress rehearsal was carried out this summer when the National Park's guard has removed the scientist Heorhi Kazulka from the hall where together with public representatives the discussion of the National Park's draft management plan was going. It was done because of the caprice-order by the Park's general director. The Kamenetz Tower or the White Tower, one of the ancient symbols of White Russia, is raised on a high hill above the once deep river of Lesnaya (Forest River). This common name, by the way, has resulted from a mistake, a literary mistake. In 1893, a book by Russian scientist Georgiy Kartsev "Hunting in Belovezhskaya Pushcha" with the records "the White Tower is situated at the river of Belaya (White River)" was issued. Why is the 600th anniversary? Figure "is adhered" to historical documents. The modern Belovezhskaya Pushcha which has avoided intensive economic activities has been looked like a titbit for archaeologists for a long time - thousand-year historical strata on its territory had all chances to be conserved up to now. However, strict protection was a barrier for archaeological researches too. The situation has changed after the most titled reserve of the country began a very active preparation for celebration of its 600th anniversary. At that time a decision was also accepted to give access for scientists to the most protected area of the primeval forest and even to allow them to carry out archeological excavations there, but under conditions if the researches will serve not only purely scientific goals but also will further popularize the Reserve. And already today it is possible to say that the archaeologists will cope with this task. The today's festival (from 15th to 17th May) is devoted to a memorable date – the 600th anniversary since first nature protection decrees in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. There could be proud of the fact that our collective will begin the celebration of this anniversary. He has witnessed a rather harmless hunting for antelopes. These animals run away in the face of any danger. However, the case when the antelope unexpectedly attacked a dismayed rider (look a picture) was recorded. Any hunting bodes unexpectedness. Since 2001 local activists went online publicising the violations on a designated web site. Authorities originally attempted to shut down the website, but after it picked up in visibility and reached the international community, they became much more cautious and, even going as far as acting to protect the forest.

The human more often defended animals useful for his economy or simply beautiful. As regards of his competitors, intolerance always prevailed. Hunters, supported by a certain part of representatives of the zoological science serving them (or more precisely, of the pseudo-science because the genuine science develops, instead of standing up for old dogmas) were thought up many myths concerning the wolf which purpose was to deceive the public opinion, to create a negative wolf's image and, as a consequence, to achieve annihilation of this main competitor of the hunters. What is the subject to speak in the Nikolai Gussowski's famous poem? On October 23 of the last year, our newspaper published a big article "A Song about Bison. What do we know about the life of Nikolai Gussowski?" by Georgiy Korzhenevskiy, a student of local lore from the town of Volozhin. An opinion was expressed for the first time there, actually basing on facts, that the famous poet was born, has grown and saw hunting for menacing animal in the village of Ussovo (it has then amalgamated with the village of Korolevshchina) located on an Usa's coast river, the tributary of the river of Neman, in former Lithuanian and now in the Nalibokskaya Pushcha. Scientist-experts have expressed approval for this statement. The offer of the author of the article henceforth to call the poem, based upon its Latin name Carmen de (...) bisontis (...), "The Song about Bison" was only under disputes. However, G Korzhenevskiy was not of flat refusal in this case.

This statement resulted from Belarusian and Polish scientists’ documental survey. The first mentioning in the chronicles on Grand Duke Vytautas’ and Jogaila’s hunting for catering of the unity troops who won in the Battle of Grunwald is dated exactly since December, 1409. There is much to do for preparations for anniversary celebration including careful R&D works studying historical legacy of Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, detailed analysis of historical, archeological and ethnographical sources and data as well as to develop recommendations on its practical application.

January 31, 2008.| The market economy is getting into Belarusian protected areas
"The Humanitarian Ecological Magazine", No 1
The purpose of biosphere reserves, national parks, churches, libraries, museums and theatres is to save intangible values. It is impossible to expect profit earning from them because they are not the field of business. Their applicability is to make non-financial values. How, for example, can one count up the profit from the Tretiakovskaya Gallery or the Louvre ? Of course, it is possible to follow the other path by placing pinball machines, building a casino and substantial increasing income from tourism development in national parks. However, they will be no national parks more. This is the immoral and anti-ecological way in which, unfortunately, the management of the Belarusian National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" has passed after creation of "The Belarusian Grandfather Frost Manor" there. Moreover, a Professor of Economics from one of the Belarusian High Schools has come to the point that ostensibly "the society has faced a dilemma of submission of ecology to economic laws", it means to a purse of businessmen. It is a pity that Belarusian scientists and experts have completely forgotten the simple truth - Dollar, if even being at a dog's lead, always threats to a wild nature. They eulogize "the market economy" but they do not know what they are doing. The article below is the example of that.

A momentous event occurred recently and it can dramatically impact Belovezhskaya Pushcha's history. The Council of Europe (CE) has not renewed the European Diploma of Protected Areas for the National park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" and CE has not canceled it either. The validity is suspended for a year. In spring of 2008 Belovezhskaya Pushcha is to be visited by independent experts to check the alternations in the National park, compliance with CE recommendations and availability of the new 10-year management plan. The final decision there will then make. Further in the article is about the situation and problems in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in connection with implementation of the recommendations of the Diploma and about a letter from the Belarusian public to the Council of Europe. The final is an appeal to the President Alexander Lukashenka on who are those you are going with them celebrate the 600-annuversary of Belovezhskaya Pushcha since its first decrees on protection – with the disgraceful people or with men of honour?
January 10, 2008.| European Diploma for Belovezhskaya Pushcha: how it happened Nikolai Bambiza, Tatiana Nikolaeva, "Zarya" (The Dawn) Newspaper, No 2
Late November the Standing Committee of the Berne Convention in Strasbourg (France) considered the issue on renewal of the Diploma of Protected Areas of the Council of Europe (a European Diploma) for one of the top-outstanding reserves of the world – the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha". It should be mentioned there was a lot of rumors and gossips on this issue particularly in the opposition press. Galina Volchuga, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Protection, Igor Kachanovsky, Chief of the Department of Nature Resources Protection and Utilization at the Administration of Affairs of the President, and Nikolai Bambiza, General Director of the State Nature Protection Institution "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" presented driving arguments for prolongation of the European Diploma's validity. After the Belarusian delegation report on the CE recommendations' performance was presented, the Standing Committee stated reasonability to reexamine the National Park. We, editorial staff, decided to find out details of the Strasbourg trip straight from the tin and questioned Nikolai Nikolaevich Bambiza on some issues under concern.
