December 21, 2001| Not directors, the others scorch pots
Michael NESTERUK, «Vecherniy Brest» (The Evening Brest) Newspaper One of acquaintances from Belovezhskaya Pushcha has told a story about an unsuccessful attempt of production of pots in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha recently. The story could be quite funny if not to know how the strained situation in the National Park was made acute with the advent to power of a new director half a year ago. Nickolay Bambiza is reputed not only as a man of stern disposition who is inclined to the fast reprisal with those who are not agreeing, but also dispelled the myth about «a firm economist», having been composed in Pripyatskiy Reserve yet. And the story with the pots only convinced locals from Pushcha that they wouldn’t be bored with their new director. December 20, 2001| The beetle is more terrible than foot-and-mouth disease
Lilia HLYSTUN, «Sovetskaya Byelorussia» (The Soviet Byelorussia) Newspaper, #370 Belovezhskaya Pushcha is in trouble. A small but a very perfidious beetle — bark beetle — runs the show here. The scientists explain the present splash of activity of the vermin by the increase of the sun activity and the drought that occurred in 2000. It is impossible to save the spruce after the vermin’s getting under the bark. The best way out, to woodcutters’ mind, is to fell it fast and to remove it from the forest in order the vermin not to attack the neighbouring trees. Generally speaking, personally I think that everyone must save the Pushcha. It’s one of the country’s corners, which is nice to visit, and we are not ashamed of showing it to our guests. It is necessary to do everything possible for our descendants to see this famous forest. December 19, 2001| Anxious dream îf Belovezha
Serguey PROTAS, «Zvyazda» (The Star) Newspaper, #255 Old relic of Belarus — Belovezhskaya Pushcha has got into troubles. Now the trouble is ecologically «clear». In result of some natural processes the mass reproduction of the bark beetle has begun. The specialists say there is nothing strange in this fact: the appearance of bark beetle in the forest is absolutely normal. These beetles like any other insects are the necessary component of the forest ecosystem. Extremely dry spring of the last year was the main reason for mass reproduction of bark beetles. This spring and summer had also many hot and dry days. The world wide praxis confirms: the process of mass reproduction of bark beetles cannot be stopped. One can speak only of minimization of consequences. Vermin is Polygamist. To fell or not to fell? What must be done? December 12, 2001| The witness of history
Maria ASMONT, «Narodnaya Volya» (People’s Will) Newspaper, #232 Michail Babich, the former officer of guard of Vyacheslav Kebich (former leader of the government), tells about events of 1991 in Viskuly where the pact of the disintegration of the USSR and creation of the CIS was signed, «They were afraid of a treachery in Viskuly», he says. December 08, 2001| Cold December in Viskuly
Yakov ALEKSEYCHIK, «7 Dney» (7 Days) Newspaper, #49 The weekly «7 days» opens a new heading «How did it happen» by the publication of this material. And we start it with a story about some traits of those turning days that had changed the life of the whole planet, passed with a scalpel through hearts and souls of hundred million people, when the pact of the disintegration of the USSR was signed. The general director of BELTA Yakov Alekseychik was in Viskuli at that time, and he told the world about the decisions that had been taken there. December 08, 2001| The Union was not spent on drink, it just overcame itself
Tatiana KUCHINSKAYA, «Den» (The Day) Newspaper, #100 Being a quite popular politician without this interview, Stanislav SHUSHKEVICH (former leader of parliament) will probably become the person number 1 in Belarus today. Planning this interview we understood that Stanislav Stanislavovich would be «waltzing» on the pages of hundreds newspapers at the day of the ten-year anniversary of the USSR’s funeral. But we couldn’t resist for visiting one of the three «Belovezhskaya bisons». December 08, 2001| Viskuly: the black & the white
Irina BURNOSENKO, «Den» (The Day) Newspaper, #100 Fookw and memoirs are devoted to this event of the ten-year remoteness, films are shot about it, hundreds articles are written about it too. There are no people on all the huge post-soviet area that hadn’t been touched by it. And now, after ten years of arguing with the history, we still remember: the largest and the most original country in the world stopped its existence on December 8. But it’s enough to remember about those events, which had taken place in 1990–1991, in order to understand the sense of the document that had appeared in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. December 08, 2001| 45 people sat at the table devoted to making mention of the Soviet Union
Lyudmila MASLYUKOVA, «Sovetskaya Byelorussia» (The Soviet Byelorussia) Newspaper, #357 It happened in Viskuly ten years ago. At night from the seventh to the eighth of December, 1991, as they say, the people of USSR went to bed in one country and woke up in another… The historical upheaval, accomplished in the backwoods of Belovezhskaya Pushcha under the cover of a dark night in conditions of a secret, still disturbs imagination. The day before the jubilee date the correspondent of «SB» questioned our colleague — the deputy of the editor-in-chief  of «People’s Will» Valeriy Drozdov who found himself in the center of the event. December 07, 2001| We were bringing that day as near as we could
«Byelorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta» (The Byelorussian business newspaper) Newspaper, #1079 10 years ago, December 8, 1991, the Soviet Union passed into oblivion. This man is valued and respected abroad — for courage and political foresight. But on his Motherland he is misunderstood and blamed for the impossibility of carrying out the idiotic dream of communism’s victory all over the world. All the problems that can’t be solved by the present leaders are blamed on Stanislav Shushkevich. This is for the fact that he had ruled the Republic of Belarus ten years ago and led it in the steps of democratic development. This is for the fact that he, together with the leaders of Russia and the Ukraine, stated the death of «the great and mighty» having given all the republics of the former Soviet Union a possibility to unite into a new economical community — the Community of Independent States. The day before the round date the correspondent of «The Byelorussian Business Newspaper» met with Stanislav Shuchkevich. December 04, 2001| The last sigh of the Pushcha
Irina BURNOSENKO, «Den» (The Day) Newspaper, #98 Belovezhskaya Pushcha is killed, it is being killed, soon it will prosper — the people having direct connection to it express such different opinions about the present situation in the famous nature reserve. Belovezhskaya Pushcha has lived through a great deal of events in its time — tsar hunting, continuous felling, awkward chiefs and the masherov improvement of the soil. But will it be able to go through the present temporary hosts, felling secular pine-trees under the pretext of sanitary felling, closing their eyes on scientists’ warnings in the hope of getting profit. And biologists confirm that once more and the Pushcha will become an ordinary forest not being able to feed such a number of animals and birds as today. In essence. Parquet instead of science. One against everyone? The Pushcha is to be given to ecologists. December 01, 2001| Glory for Viskuly, oblivion for Pushcha
«Brestski Kuryer» (The Brest Courier) Newspaper, #48 Shooting groups of the Russian channels during the recent time attack the National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha». They shoot films devoted to the ten-year anniversary of disintegration of the USSR. The famous residence in Viskuly is in the frame. Behind the frame is another tragedy developing on the territory of the unique natural corner. The deputy director who had been responsible for scientific research Heorhi Kazulka was dismissed from the National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha». November 24, 2001| How do you live, forest gullivers?
Alexander PHILIPOVICH, «7 Dney» (7 Days) Newspaper, #47 35 years ago bison was included into the International Red Data Book as a threatened species. Nowadays it is a restoring species. Bisons inhabit nature reserves of 29 countries of the world and amount about three thousands animals as the total. There are no special reasons for the future of an ancient animal. But there is also no hope for the bison to find the former grandeur, to become «mighty and furious» beast, as Nickolay Gusovskiy saw it five centuries ago. During the centuries Belovezhskaya Pushcha has been the most favorable place of inhabitation for the bison of plain subspecies form. But the problem is that there is little place for bisons on the allotted territory. They are under the sight of a rifle and… a tommy gun. November 21, 2001| Your ancient grief is clear to me...
Elena TRIBULEVA, Vecherniy Brest» (The Evening Brest) Newspaper The changes that can’t be analyzed correctly have shaken the State National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha» for the latest decade. The decision of UNESCO about including the Park into the list of World Heritage of Mankind, giving to the Pushcha the status of Biosphere Reserve, its rewarding with a European Diploma — all this, no doubt, is from the category of positive events. What concerns resubmission of the nature Reserve to the Property Management Department of the President and following it deviation from the environmental principles, local inhabitants of Pushcha themselves have great doubts as regards positivism. And the beginning leapfrog with directors really didn’t promote to the improvement of affairs in the park. There have changed nearly dozen of them. The monument to the bark beetle. Forest is felled and staff is discharged. Getting deeper into debt. September 01, 2001| Chain saws perform the requiem
Valentina KOZLOVICH, «Brestski Kuryer» (The Brest Courier) Newspaper, #37 Because of the so-called sanitary felling of the forest State National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha» can lose the European Diploma. During the year beginning with the September experts will be watching carefully the events that take place in our Pushcha and in September next year they will make a decision connecting with the Diploma. There has been received an inquiry from UNESCO — the international organization asks the Belarusian government to comment on strengthening of the industrial felling of the forest. September 08, 2001| The oldest forest of Europe
Svetlana MAKAROVA, «Zvyazda» (The Star) Newspaper, #185 Vyacheslav Semakov acquainted leaders of different countries, ministers and famous public figures with Belovezhskaya Pushcha. And nowadays, when VIPs visit the National Park, Vyacheslav Vasilyevich frequently accompanies them during the excursion as before. He studied nature for all his life. He has worked in Belovezhskaya Pushcha for more than ten years. Today Vyacheslav Semakov is the guest of our editorial office. September 07-14, 2001| The seat of the national drying
An interview with V. Dranchuk, «Svobodnie Novosti» (The Free News) Newspaper, #34 «Human erosion», which destroys our nature, does not spare reserved sites either, not even if they are as well-known as the Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Here vandal tendencies and forest-subjugation grow longer roots with each year, and become exploitation plans, in consent with satan. The objectives of the World Heritage Site are quickly overwritten by the economic interests of the presidential administration. The authority does not rely on culture, science, and love for nature here, but focuses on logging, tourist hunting, and on getting foreign currency. Today Valery Dranchuk, the leader of the group, founder and chief-editor of the «Belovezhskaya Pushcha» Newspaper continues the discussion on this topic. August 16, 2001| The adventures of Poles in Belovezhskaya Pushcha
Semen BUKCHIN, «Narodnaya Volya» (People’s Will) Newspaper, #150 It has already been told about a popular bar «At Volodya’s» which is situated in Hajnovka (Podlyashye) and is famous by its communist setting, the statuettes of Lenin, Stalin, Marx, Engels, different soviet-communist things that include red flags and posters, the uniform of officers of the Committee of State Safety, in which waiters show off, and records of soviet marches and other ideological songs being played while sitting in the bar and drinking vodka or beer with snacks. But this common soviet «chic» seemed not to be enough for the bar’s owner Voyceh Rynazhevskiy. Now Voyceh demonstrates his «soviet ideological theatre», how they say, in action. In his bar he receives applications for participation in the action «The Belarusian frontier guards’ attack of a Polish train». August 09-16, 2001| Belovezhskaya Pushcha, your ancient sorrow is clear to me
Tatyana ANTONOVA-MELYANOVICH, «Trud -7» (Work – 7) Newspaper As it seemed to us, the administration of the National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha» is afraid of journalists. Anyway, park heads did not express any enthusiasm on our visit. As we found out, people here are afraid of the general director of the National Park. They say he is drastic. He does not bear any objections. He is firm as steel in carrying out the directives of his governing body. On coming to the Pushcha, Nickolai Bambiza immediately announced that he is going to work with a team of adherents and therefore, those who disagree with the «politics of the party and government» can look for a job in another place. Presently, the clear cutting of the forest that was obviously a plan with expected success is suspended. The commission working at the end of July in the Belovezhskaya Pushcha has revealed the numerous rough infringements of the rules and the technological discipline, as well as infringements of the nature protection legislation and its application. It is difficult to foresee the coming events. But in any case, those who are not indifferent about the situation in their country will continue to protect the Pushcha. August 03, 2001| The knocking of axes broke the ancient silence of Pushcha
Elena TRIBULEVA, «Vecherniy Brest» (The Evening Brest) Newspaper The saw’s cogs or the woodcutter’s axe never dug into living flesh of the trees in Belarusian Belovezhskaya Pushcha during post-war years. And here comes news: clear sanitary felling on the territory of the seven quarters in the area of 50 hectares has begun. A lot of nature reserve employees think that mass invasion of the bark beetle has become just a convenient occasion fot the vast felling. At their urgent request another commission arrived at the Pushcha. After this the clear felling has been stopped. The general director of the National Park Nickolai Bambiza advised the members of the commission not to flatter themselves with an unsteady victory. The new owner of the Pushcha seems to be interested in continuation of the felling. How is the Pushcha to get out from numerous debts in which it is up to the ears even more with the buying of a saw bench? The local inhabitants themselves see the only way out in getting rid of the unnecessary voracious saw bench as soon as possible and being given paying off the credit to the very party that had come out as a guarantee. August 01, 2001| The press-tour is set aside, or why the letter of the Belarusian Green activists was lost in the president administration
Valery DRANCHUK, «Narodnaya Volya» (People’s Will) Newspaper, #138 Despite of the Aarhus Convention on free access of people to ecological information, justice and decision making, which was ratified by our country in 1998, the press in Belarus is deprived of primary sources of information in many cases, especially in the environmental field. As the Editor of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha Newspaper I have been familiar with many facts indicating that the activity of the most famous Belarusian specially protected territories was dramatically changed upside down. Today this virgin forest is threatened due to so-called «clear sanitary cuttings» with the total area of 50 hectares. Therefore the newspaper has initiated the press-tours to the famous natural sites of Belarus. The purpose of them is to involve other mass media and together with representatives of the general public to gather the primary information, as the people say, everything by own eyes. July 24, 2001| "Black" business of casual workers
Valery DRANCHUK, «Byelorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta» (The Byelorussian business newspaper) Newspaper, #1002 Clear sanitary cuttings, covering a total area of 50 hectares, have started in seven quarters of the National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha». That is the result of the long-term «assiduous» work of the Property Management Department of the President of the Republic of Belarus fulfilled on the protected territories. The decision on clear sanitary cuttings was taken privately, on grounds of the so-called «Certificate of spruce frests inspection», avoiding the Scientific and Technical Council of the park and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Now, the Initiative Group «Belarusian Green Association» appeals to the public to protect natural national property. July 23, 2001| The “plague-stricken” drowsy state
The Initiative Group “Belarussian Green Association”, «Svaboda» (Liberty) Newspaper The clear sanitary cuttings, covering a total area of 50 hectares, have been initiated in seven quarters of the National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha». That is the result of the long-term «assiduous» work of the Property Management Department of the Presidential Administration of the Republic of Belarus fulfilled on the protected territories. Higher-ups have completely ignored the professional discipline, the ecological approaches. The intense clear cuttings business poses a danger of both enormous losses of biodiversity in the best preserved corner of the green Atlanta, and of great moral costs. But the present potentates of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha try shamelessly to forget that they are in control of the most representative resources of the country, the Biosphere Reserve included in the List of World Heritage Sites of Mankind. They forget because they are casual managers, and think they should be quick to take, while chaos and mayhem are in the country, and before future changes come. Their mentality is created by living in a criminality plagued drowsy state. June 30, 2001| Come into the forest as to a temple of nature
Michail SHIMANSKIY, «Respublika» (The Republic) Newspaper, #147 They are specially protected natural territories of Belarus. The latest years became highly significant for these unique natural complexes. They were given in competence of the Property Management Department of the President of the Republic of Belarus. How do they serve our people especially what considers leisure, unity with our wonderful nature and ecological education? The head of the Department of Protected Territories and Forest Game Grounds Alexandr Luchkov tells. April 07, 2001| By reserved paths
Svetlana VASILEVICH, «Sovetskaya Byelorussia» (The Soviet Byelorussia) Newspaper, #98 There are 4 national parks, Berezinski Biosphere Reserve, 94 partly reserved territories of republican importance and more than 400 partly reserved territories of local importance. The National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha» is included into the List of World Natural and Cultural Heritage of Mankind by decision of UNESCO. Today Belovezhskaya Pushcha is one of the four most famous and unique forest sites all over the world because of its origination. The Global Ecological Fund took it as ward. The interest to our natural resources grows every year both from the side of foreigners and compatriots. The head of the Department of Tourism, Information and Exhibitions at the Property Management Department of the President Alexandr Selvonyuk introduces us to the organization of tourism on specially protected natural territories. February 08, 2001| The wolf hunting is going on
Fedor MUCHA, «Sovetskaya Byelorussia» (The Soviet Byelorussia) Newspaper, #39 The narration is about a wolf. The workers of the forest hunting-guarding service have already killed 9 wolves in Belovezhskaya Pushcha this season. The number of beasts of prey is reasonably regulated. It is not necessary to organize large drives in winter for keeping up an optimum number of the predators. It is enough to destroy a den with wolf cubs in summer. Once, after such not a humane operation, a wolf cub appeared in the nature museum of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha Reserve and Natalia Dyachenko, philosophy doctor of biology decided to train him. A four-year-old wolf cub, Rem by name, lived in her house in the village of Kamenyuki and he was a very nice and good-natured puppy.
