The European bison (Bison Bonasus), sometimes known as the wisent, originally inhabited most of the European continent in great numbers. In the 16th century, polish kings took steps to protect the species. At the beginning of the 21st century, there were an estimated 2900 European bison globally. But this does not mean that the European Bison is out of danger. For these reasons, the european bison is still on the red list, which catalogs endangered plants andanimals worldwide. Man's determination to preserve this species has helped it to survive to our time. Dr. Krasinski remind us however that 'the fate of the European bison provides an example of how a species could be brought to the brink of extinction in a very short time and then save by great efforts. ... Yes, indeed. Despite of their name and biology connected to excrements of wild and home animals, dung-beetles, on closer examination, are very beautiful bugs! Besides, they are not living all their life in dung. They live also as being "free walking" in woods and fields.

Starting with this page I will begin a new heading "Fungi of Belovezhskaya Pushcha". I have already a big collection of photos of fungi. For sure, it is a very little part in comparison with the fact how much fungi species are growing in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. According to rough scientific estimates they are over 3,500! Among them mushrooms are "only" about 600 species (edible are about 100). The others are mycelia, polypore etc. The people neither pay attention nor suspect about their existence at all.

Two weeks ago I visited the Belovezhskaya Pushcha's forest to pick mushrooms. This year is poor of them. However, I have met on the path in a pine forest a big and rare ground beetle - Carabus coriaceus in Latin listed in a Red Data Book, not only in Belarus but also in other countries (in Belovezhskaya Pushcha this species is not numerous but at the same time is not rare). I began recently to survey by using Internet the topic of how the people are interested in the growing ecological crisis, how to prevent the eco-catastrophe and how the improvement of the ecological situation depends personally on them.

The Web-site "The Belovezhskaya Pushcha - 21st Century" is dedicated to providing information about the problems of protection and conservation of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park - this unique nook of wilderness in the center of Europe.
At present, Belovezhskaya Pushcha, which is a National Park, a Biosphere Reserve, and part of the World Heritage, is in danger. There has been intensive activity started in the unique wilderness complex using unsound economic and management methods that threaten to destroy this unique virgin forest.
If the current management policies of destroying this ancient relict forest are not stopped today, then tomorrow will be too late. In this scenario the Belovezhskaya Pushcha will be transformed into specialized forest management enterprise where, under the guise of "wilderness conservation" or "nature protection" the remnants of the primeval old-aged Belovezha forest, ancient flora and fauna species will be ruined. The huge tree stumps and steady unnatural lines of artificial forest regeneration will be all that is left to show to the tourists. Read more [ here ]
