National Park Administration Moved to the Village of the Park’s Head

By Julia Rimashevskaya, Radio "Liberty Life", December 30, 2008

Administrative department of the National Park “Pripyatski” has been relocated from the town of Turov where had always been placed to the village of Lyaskovichi. So more than half of staffers of the scientific department had to be quitted their jobs. Some of them may think that the administrative department was relocated to Lyaskovichi for conveniences of the head of the park – Stepan Bambiza.

Ex-staffer of the Pripyatski National Park Inna Zenina says that the scientific department movement from Turov to Lyaskovichi is completely illogical: “What’s the point? The case is the forest stayed where it was! The staffers have to use transport to get to the forest. Now they have to cross 50 km from Lyaskovichi to get to the forest! Can the country, the establishment itself, afford it?”

Earlier it was the head of Pripyatski National Park Stepan Bambiza who had to get from Lyaskovichi, his residential place, to Turov. Now the administration is where his residence is. And this is the very explanation why the administrative corps has changed its location, believes Inna Zenina: “One cannot think of any true logical explanation of this, willfulness it is and no more. The head disliked Turov, he didn’t want to move there and that’s why he just relocated the establishment there. It rooted from the very beginning – resources and so on – everything went to Lyashkovichi”.

There is a threat of dismissing from the scientific department of the laboratory assistant Anatoliy Domashkevich. He is the only breadwinner of the family, his wife has to look after the disabled child. Olga Domashkevich considers a possible dismissing of her husband to be unfair:

“My husband has worked for 32 years. 12 scientific publications… Professionalism at a higher level, jack of all trade and so on. And here he found no post. We thought he’d be fined yesterday, but it’s not clear yet what’s on. Here comes a New Year: I am out of work, my daughter is an invalid, and my husband is likely to be dismissed – a pretty kettle of fish…”

According to Inna Zenina, the dismissing of Anatoliy Domashkevich is a great loss for the scientific department activity of the National Park: “He is practically the only one to have been working from the foundation of the Reserve proper. He knows the entire forest, knows all monitoring, stationary, scientific areas. He has been monitoring subsoil waters. Few people know at all except him what and where one can find in the forest… ”

There is an eco-educational center in the building where the administrative corps has been situated in Turov before. The head of which is Stepan Bambiza’a niece. In the administration of the National Park the relocation of the administrative corps from Turov to Lyashkovichi has been commented on anonymously: “Well, I may respond you now – but tomorrow I’ll be a man overboard too!”
