Rubbish around the tourist center of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, 2005, the village of Kamenyuki, continuation

Infringements: Clauses 26 and 27 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "About Special Protected Natural Territories and Objects" are violated; Clause 62 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "About Environment Protection" is violated.

Events, facts, documents and evidences: The older page "National Park shows its anti-ecological ways to tourists, 2004" outlined that the National Park manages to maintain cleanliness in the area of Belovezhskaya Pushcha in an unsatisfying way. This applies also to the forest area surrounding the tourist centre in the village of Kamenyuki. The wood is used for dumping waste.

An inspection carried out in 2005 revealed that the situation tends not to change for the better. These pictures show great quantities of rubbish around the restaurant, the hotel and the enclosures with wild animals. Heaps of bottles, cellophane packages, plastic utensils, jars, packages and other household rubbish testify that not only tourists, but also the staff of the restaurant or the hotel use the surrounding wood as a site to dump garbage.

These pictures show leafs mixed with industrial rubbish, which have been dumped in the wood that surrounds the tourist centre. These leafs were removed in autumn from the area of the tourist center, and were left behind in the nearby wood, creating a kind of dump. All of this can be seen by tourists who visit Belovezhskaya Pushcha, if they walk into the wood a little deeper.

These pictures were made in a distance of one kilometer from the tourist centre. It is visible that rubbish is brought into Belovezhskaya Pushcha by use of lorries owned by the National Park.

In the middle of Belovezhskaya Pushcha one can see spots of bonfires, with industrial rubbish lying scattered nearby, as well as old car tire-covers that have been thrown out of vehicles, as this picture shows.

All of this is a consequence of too intensive economic activity inside the protected wood of Belovezhskaya Pushcha as well as the very low level of civilization not so much the tourists as of the staff of the National Park.

PS. On the older page "National Park shows its anti-ecological ways to tourists, 2004" pictures of a dump of rubbish placed in the middle of the reserved wood at a distance of one kilometer from the tourist centre were shown. Rubbish was taken out from the restaurant of the National Park. These photos of the dump have been made in February 2005

After these photos and this information became accessible to the public, the administration of the National Park applied the measures needed. It cleared this plot of the wood of industrial rubbish earlier delivered from the restaurant. However, the quality of the cleaning action proved not to be sufficient, since some smaller pieces of rubbish, such as plastic plugs, spoons and packages remained to lay on the ground.

On the other hand, the site where this rubbish has been brought to is not known. It might concern a dump ground, or other plots located deeper into the reserved wood. It is not excluded that the heap of rubbish from the restaurant was transferred to another stand of Pine wood located 1.5 kilometers from the village of Kamenyuki, situated close to former military barracks. The administration of the National park has set up a non-authorized dump ground on this location (see the page "Pollution of Belovezhskaya Pushcha: dumping rubbish and sawdust of the timber processing plant, 2005, the village of Kamenyuki, continuation"). It is possible that the rubbish was added to rubbish from the restaurant that had already been dumped there. The photos below show heaps of industrial rubbish originating from the restaurant of the National Park, which has been put on a non-authorized dumping ground.
