Pollution of Belovezhskaya Pushcha: dumping rubbish and sawdust of a timber processing plant, 2005, the village of Kamenyuki, continuation

Infringements: Clauses 25, 26 and 27 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "About Special Protected Natural Territories and Objects" are violated; Clause 62 of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "About Environment Protection" is violated.

Events, facts, documents and evidences: On an older page (2004) the serious problem of pollution with rubbish in Belovezhskaya Pushcha has already been described in detail.

A next inspection of sanitary conditions in woods of Belovezhskaya Pushcha was carried out in 2005. The inspection revealed that, as in 2004, sanitary conditions in the woods of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the area surrounding the village of Kamenyuki is unsatisfactory.

The central site of dumping, as in 2004, was closed to hinder local citizens to dump rubbish. However, one entrance to the area of this dump was open, while it used to be blocked by a continuous fence. This entrance is situated next to a sign which indicates the prohibition of using the dump place.

Vehicles owned by the National Park can enter the dump place through this entrance. The first picture snows a heavy lorry unloading dust in the area of the dump.

At the same time, works to excavate sand have been conducted close to the dump and within the fenced area. For this purpose the area was cleared of its forest cover by use of bulldozers. This is the most barbarous way of removing trees, as is clearly visible on the pictures above. Living trees were uprooted, moved and put into banks, while some Pine trees at the edge of the uprooted site were damaged by heavy tractors.

A new dump area, specially made last year at some distance from the village of Kamenyuki, did not become the common place where locals bring their rubbish. These pictures show that the amount of rubbish increased only slightly on this dump compared to last year.

At the same time the wood in the surroundings of the village of Kamenyuki, as during last year, continued to be polluted with more household rubbish. Locals who do not want to go to the new dump adopt a practice to leave rubbish in the woods surrounding Kamenyuki.

Such photos, showing a variety of rubbish in the wood of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, can still be made.

As has already been specified in older pages, the administration of the National Park has created a (non-authorized and illegal) dumping ground in a Pine wood 1.5 kilometers from the village of Kamenyuki, near former military barracks. Inspection revealed that, like in last year, no care is taking of sanitary norms within this territory. Building and household rubbish continues to be dumped there and to be placed just within the wood.

These pictures show big heaps of building dust put directly in the wood.

In this area the administration of the National Park set up dumping of sawdust and waste of the timber processing plant over the last year.

In 2005 an area close to a road was cleared by use of a bulldozer. Heaps of sawdust were brought to the site and were used to make the surface flat.

However, sites of illegal dump grounds located at some distance from the road have not been cleared of waste. Big areas remained covered with heaps of household and building rubbish, and sawdust and waste from the timber processing plant.

However, even areas cleared of sawdust and rubbish remained to be filled with household and building rubbish, which has been brought there later.

The wood roads that are connected with the village of Kamenyuki are full of household and building rubbish as well.

The level of pollution of the wood area of Belovezhskaya Pushcha around the village of Kamenyuki testifies that the attitude of the administration of the National Park regarding sanitary rules and norms of management in the wood are illiterate, negligent and felonious.
