October 31, 2011 Website "Wild Nature" Nikolai Vorobei "I feel tolerably after the surgery"

Injured in an accident on December 22, 2010, the employee of the National Nature Sanctuary "Vygonoshchanskoye" Nikolai Vorobei is now in the Republican Scientific and Practical Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics. The guy recently had surgery on the femur - his leg heals poorly. After surgery, Nikolai is feeling tolerable but he does not complain.

The treatment of the young man lasts for almost a year. He periodically can go home, where he is trying to slowly move around on crutches.

Recall that Nikolai was delivered to a metropolitan hospital with multiple severe gunshot wounds and high blood loss after the tragic incident in the Sanctuary "Vygonoshchanskoye", as being very close to the death. He was severely wounded by small fire arms in the performance of official duties.

In early September of 2011, a trial was held in this case. The conviction came into force for a 38-year ranger of the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" who shot at Nikolai. Court of the Ivatsevichi district found him guilty under Art. 155 of the Penal Code (causing grievous bodily harm through negligence) and sentenced to hard labor for one year on the job place with the state income withholding 15% of earnings. The compensation for material damage amounting to more than 4.5 million Rubles (~ $ 560), as well as the moral one amounting to 15 million Rubles (~$ 1,875) were exacted from the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" for benefit of the victim.

Nikolai Vorobei is not satisfied with the results of the court and the amount of the compensation. He intends to seek a review of the amount of the monetary compensation. However, while the guy lies on his hospital bed, the mother intercedes for him.

Nikolai told us that friends do not forget about it in difficult times and continue to visit him. When it is possible to access the internet, he comes to our portal and read the news.

We wish Nikolai full recovery, the presence of mind and speedy return to his beloved work!

October 23, 2011 Website "Capital TV (CTV)" Video: Seven Wonders of Belarus. Belovezhskaya Pushcha

Seven Wonders of the Belarusian have been selected. Journalists of the CTV joined to the project by "People's Newspaper" to show the best attractions of the country. For three months everyone could vote for the most, in his view, worthy object. The top seven consists of the Bobruisk fortress, Bernardine Church in Budslav, St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk, Mir Castle, Lake Naroch and the Brest Fortress.

Today we are completing a series of reports on the "Seven Wonders of Belarus" and tell about the leader of the top seven Belovezhskaya Pushcha, the pride of all Europe.

Centuries-old oak, pine and ash trees. This is the relict forest which has no equal in Europe in number of species of plants and animals. This is the place of pilgrimage for thousands of tourists and lovers of untouched nature. Belovezhskaya Pushcha is a national park and a pride of the Belarusian people.

As experience shows, it is not the pride of only Belarusian people. Over 300,000 visitors from more than 90 countries visited the National Park in the past year. And none of them remained indifferent.

Allan Almeida, a tourist (India):
We visited a museum and a residence of Santa Claus. It was interesting to learn about it and talk. I first saw one of the symbols of Belarus - the bison. In general, I got a strong impression and learned a lot. I think I would come here again and again.

Bialowieza Forest is located on both sides of the Belarusian-Polish border. Therefore, the border crossing Bialowieza-Pererov was opened for the convenience of tourists and locals. At this point you can cross the border on a bicycle or even on foot, the correspondent of the TV-company "Capital TV" informs.

Vladimir Nesterovich, a spokesman for the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus:
There is a small crossing point in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, which has an international status. Any citizen, who has documents to cross the state border, can take advantage of this crossing point. The only caveat he can do it in the daytime and on foot or by bicycle.

The largest European forest is also a boundless scientific ground. Each year scientists make new discoveries and archeologists find historic artifacts that are fraught in this forest reserve.

Vadim Lakiza, head of the Department of Archeology of Primitive Society at the Institute of History, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus:
Archaeological sites, which we investigated for almost five years, are the jewel in historical terms. Each of these more than 50 sites and settlements of different periods with a rich variety of archaeological material can be an interesting target for development of tourist business in the territory of the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha".

Pushcha like a magnet has long since been attracted tourists, scholars and politicians.

20 years ago, the event occurred here that changed the lives of millions of people - the signing of the cease-existence of the Soviet Union, the largest country in the world.

The Belovezhskaya meeting took place in an atmosphere of super secrecy. Because of it, unexpected situations, incidentally, have been. For example, there was no photocopier. In order to obtain a copy of an important document, which marks the end of an era, every time it had to pass it through two faxes, as the correspondent of the "Capital TV" reports.

Following the signing of this agreement, Belovezhskaya Pushcha has become known throughout the world.

But now the nature reserve is popular for millions of tourists because of not this political event, but due to its uniqueness.

October 21, 2011 Website "Tourism and Recreation" Investments in tourism: the longing for home as the engine of progress

During the Investment Forum "Belovezhskaya Pushcha - Tourism and Recreation" in the Brest region on October 19, 2011, representatives of government and business leaders discussed how to attract private investments in the tourism industry of the country.

According to Minister of Sports and Tourism Oleg Kachan, first of all tourism must be developed through private investment, so by 2015, officials plan to attract four trillion Rubles from extra-budgetary funds (this amounts to just over $ 460 million) into the tourist industry. The Forum dedicated to investment and tourism development was organized by the Ministry of Sports and Tourism with the participation of the Brest and Grodno regional executive committees for the first time. Results of the representative assembly could be the answer to the question whether Belarus can convince domestic and foreign investors to invest much own money in tourism infrastructure. However, the results are ambiguous and raise new questions, although in general the situation looks more optimistic.

Aiming to get the investment, the state takes steps towards private capital by issuing laws that reduce the tax and provide other preferences for investors. Decree No 220 "About creation of the specialized Recreational Park "August Channel adopted on May 26, 2011, is the confirmation of this. Officials responsible for tourism hope that this Decree will serve as a starting point in making such documents promoting investment in other regions of Belarus.

several projects with investors have been already implemented in the Brest region. Construction of a tourist complex in the village of Kletnoe, Pruzhany district, in the area near the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" is the most striking example. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Russian Company "PolimerStroy" Nikholai Burnos invested $ 20 million (other sources informs about almost 40 million) to create the full-fledged "rural resort" with a hotel, cottages, restaurant and sports center. There are at least two reasons to explain so impressive investment by the big business from St. Petersburg to the Belarusian tourism industry. First, the construction of a bypass road around Belovezhskaya Pushcha offers hope for a significant increase in the number of tourists in the region, so no hotel or eight already built guest houses most likely will stand empty. Second, the investor Nickolai Burnos born in the village of Kletnoe, and capital investment in improvements can be considered as the gesture of the patron, nostalgic for his homeland. According to rough estimates, to complete the task in terms of investment in the tourism industry, the government will need either to find another 23 "nostalgic benefactor" for three years, or to create more favorable conditions that to attract third-party financial means.

According to businessmen - potential investors, officials still have a lot of work in this field, and it is not just to take some legislative acts. As Chairman of the Belarusian Union of Entrepreneurs Alexander Kalinin emphasized, the 'external' rating of the country which consists of a set of indicators is important that to attract foreign investment. Alas, Belarus is the only 69th in the list of 183 countries, in the ranking "Doing Business 2012" by the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank. This data was promulgated on the same day of the Investment Forum to be held.

P.S. Other opinions voiced during the Forum "Belovezhskaya Pushcha - Tourism and Recreation", as well as examples of promising investment areas in the Brest region will be given in an upcoming issue of the "Tourism and Recreation" newspaper.

October 20, 2011 Website "Business Leader" A new road to be around Belovezhskaya Pushcha

A new highway around Belovezhskaya Pushcha is to be commissioned in November this year. The announcement was made during the Investment Forum on the problems of tourism and recreation in Belovezhskaya Pushcha.

Its most part - about 160 km - passes through the territory of the Brest region, and the rest - 38.9 km -is through the Grodno one. The total length of the roads is almost 200 km. Investment projects to develop tourist facilities in the areas adjacent to the road which runs around Belovezhskaya Pushcha will be discussed during the Forum.

The infrastructure for tourists and roadside service is planed to build in the areas of the highway. At the same time a lot of attention is paid to the preservation of optimal conditions for agriculture in the villages adjacent to the highway, and the preservation of natural balance.

October 20, 2011 Website "BelTeleRadioCompany" Video: To present new territories for investors in Belarus

The Investment Forum was held in the Brest region, where a new bypass road around Belovezhskaya Pushcha was presented.

Svetlana Vechorko listened to impressions of investors.

Bely Lesok, Kletnoe, Mokroe, Klepachi, Stoily - these original settlements of the Pruzhany district may be the most genuine tourist villages in the near future. They are like Polish Bialowieza and Belarusian Dudutki. The bypass road around Belovezhskaya Pushcha which minimized the distance all gives a powerful impetus for their development.

(Oleg Kachan, Minister of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus "Tourism should be developed by private investments. The state must create conditions. It has created them by building this wonderful road. This should attract new investors.")

Belovezhskaya Pushcha is well-known all over the world, but foreign and domestic tourists are just beginning to discover villages and farms along its border.

(Michail Grishkevich, director of "Crane" "They were surprised that there is a quiet and peaceful place in Belarus where you can relax, breathe fresh air and see what the forest and what the nature are.")

Today, 15 investment projects are ready to be offering in the Pruzhany district for investors. They include lands for a roadside service, hotel construction, sale of buildings for a nominal fee for agro-tourism facilities, and giving the old manor-park ensembles to the free use.

(Alexander Yurkevich, chairman of the Pruzhany Executive Committee "Proposals from the district authorities are the most optimal and the most profitable. One-time revenue is not needed. It is important that these facilities could attract tourists. And then have to make the economy from tourism.")

The tourism industry should be one of the leading not only for the particular region but for the whole country. Actually, investment forums like this contribute to such involving a broad range of stakeholders.

October 06, 2011 Website "The State Nature Protection Establishment "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha"" Experts' visit

From 21 to 25 September of 2011, experts of the Council of Europe officially visit Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Francoise Bauer (France), Secretary of the Department of Nature Conservation of the CE, Professor Eckhart Kuijken (Belgium), experts on the European Diploma for Protected Areas, and Lyudmila Dimitrova (Bulgaria), expert on management plans for protected areas, were members of the delegation. The visit was scheduled within the renewal of the European Diploma.

The main purpose of the mission was to inspect the implementation of recommendations in the management plan of our National Park, as well as aiding in solving problems of conservation and sustainable development of the area.

According to the experts, the European Diploma not only recognizes the value of nature but also is an effective tool to protect it. Therefore, the development of the management plan was put forward as the main condition for its validity to both sides of Bialowieza Forest to Poland and Belarus.

The management plan For Belovezhskaya Pushcha was developed in 2008 and was the first of its kind among the national parks of our country. The plan identified the key strategic objectives and prospects for development of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and outlined a plan of action and specific measures to address existing problems.

Many environmental problems outlined in the Plan can be solved by strengthening the protection of the territory and by conducting a series of special restorative events. For this the new design of the functional zoning of the National Park was developed. The zoning scheme provides an increase in zones with the more restrictive regime of protection, including a twofold (up to 57,000 ha) increase in the Wilderness Protection Zone. The project also takes into account the interests of the local population which was the subject of discussion during the visit of the experts. One of the issues concerned the development of the cross-border cooperation, particularly for the preparation of the new file (together with the Polish side) for the expansion and re-nomination of the World Heritage Sites. The experts, of course, visited Belovezhskaya Pushcha, its various functional zones, and evaluated the results of activities aimed at improving the environmental situation. The experts also got added evidence of the safety of Belovezhskaya forests.

During the visit, there has been expressed the progress in nature conservation of the National Park in other ways as well.

A press conference with representatives from the Presidential Management of Affairs, the administration and staff of the National Park, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the State Border Forces Committee of Belarus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Inspectorate of Environmental Protection, local authorities, public organizations, media and other stakeholders.

The experts will present their conclusions on the prolongation of the validity of the European Diploma to the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" at the meeting of the Committee of Ministers in February of 2012.

September 05, 2011 Website "Wild Nature" New guest houses and ecological routes to be in Belovezhskaya Pushcha

The Park's new management significantly reduces the area for business. The income that falls through the reduction of timber production will be compensated through the development of tourism.

In late September, the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" was visited by foreign experts who assessed its potential. Let's recall that the validity of a prestigious European Diploma for Belovezhskaya Pushcha was suspended four years ago.

The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" has been awarded the European Diploma in 1997 for outstanding achievements in wildlife conservation. Then, in the opinion of independent Belarusian experts in ecology, this Diploma was given to the National Park in advance, for the future improving the preservation and conservation of the protected nature of the Pushcha's relic forest.

In January 2002, when was a question on the prolongation of the European Diploma, the scandal happened. Representatives of the democratic and scientific community appealed to the experts to be no hurry and to take the time over too optimistic solution because the object's state has deteriorated and the government uses the prestigious award of the Diploma for activities which are against the principle of conservation of Belovezhskaya Pushcha. The response of the European Council was in almost doubled (from 10 to 18) increase in the number of recommendations for the next five years.

Since then, our country is trying to regain the prestigious award. The fact that it is near back started to be talking in 2009 when a plan of management of the National Park was developed in accordance with recommendations of the Council of Europe. However, real progress was made only this year - with the change of leadership in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. The new head of the National Park, Alexander Brown, who led it in April of this year, began to build a different policy, focusing not on economic activity as the former director Nikolai Bambiza did, but on preservation of the natural wealth of Pushcha. "However, I would not say that this director paid more attention to the economy, while the other to the environmental issues", deputy general director on science of the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" Vasily Arnolbik said. "There are different approaches to managing the forest complex, and there is still no consensus among scientists on what to do, for example, with dying spruce: to cut down or leave them in place."

Now the work on a new functional zoning of Pushcha is close to completing in the National Park. According to Vasily Arnolbik, it would increase the reserve forest of more than two times. According to Vasily Arnolbik, this implies an increase of the strictly protected zone of Pushcha more than two times. Now the absolutely reserved status is only 30% of the Pushcha's forest. It is planned that the area where any economic activity is prohibited will be increased by 57 thousand hectares. "Old-growth forest with unique ecosystems make 90 percent of Pushcha", the scientist says. About 6000 ha, again old-growth forests will be included in the strictly protected zone in the form of separate "islands". Thus, the area for business activities will be reduced significantly. According to Vasily Arnolbik, it will be moved to the periphery of the Park. However, the income from forest harvesting will fall. It's proposed to compensate it due to tourism development.

The Department of Excursions reported that guest houses and ecological pathways and routes will be made in the new territory. Belovezhskaya Pushcha has already a well developed structure to accommodate visitors. There are four hotels, a restaurant, several cafes, a swimming pool, gym and sauna. Rental sporting equipment is also available.

The new vector of the activity of the National Park has been very positively evaluated by EC experts. However, they have not yet given any promises about the resumption of the European Diploma for Belovezhskaya Pushcha. The verdict is expected to be passed in the Directorate General of the CE in February next year. Meanwhile, the experts continue to monitor the changes in the National Park. I should add that the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" has become perhaps the most titled among the protected natural areas of Europe over the past fifteen years. In 1992, UNESCO recognized a part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha as a World Heritage Site. In 1993, it gained the status of Biosphere Reserve, and four years later the European Diploma. Today the average age of trees in Belovezhskaya Pushcha is 110 years, while some tree stands are already two and a half centuries old! 90 percent of the forests were formed without any human intervention. Incidentally, the Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve has now also among the Belarusian protected areas awarded the European Diploma.

October 04, 2011 Website "Belsat TV" Belovezhskaya Pushcha can again receive a European Diploma

EU experts who worked in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in late September concluded that significant changes have happened in the National Park for the past four years and, therefore, a chance to get back the European Diploma is big enough. "It is important that work in the Park is now focusing on protection of the natural wealth, whereas leadership in the past was more interested in economic development in Pushcha", said by the expert Eckhart Kuijken.

The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" has been awarded the European Diploma back in 1997, but after ten years the Diploma has been suspended over environmental concerns. Claims primarily concerned illicit felling of ancient trees and export of wood materials. According to unofficial information, the former director of the National Park Nicholai Bambiza covered the illegal business, and then he at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Rumas went to work the chairman of the agricultural enterprise in Turov at the beginning of the year.

Changes in Belovezhskaya Pushcha are associated with the management of the new director of Alexander Bury. "The new leader focuses on preservation of the natural wealth of Pushcha. It is clear that the revenue of the Park from harvesting will markedly be reduced but, according to the strategy of the management, to compensate them is planned through the development of the tourism sector in the National Park", the deputy director of the Park Vasily Arnolbik said.

Ecologist Olga Ostapovich draws attention to the fact that information about the economic and scientific activities in Pushcha still remains closed for the experts. "Unfortunately, we get to know about many of the violations already after the fact of their appearance and, therefore, we cannot have an influence on the management of the National Park. In addition, illegal cutting down of trees was supported by officials at the highest level for a long time. We know that Belarusian political elite likes to relax in Pushcha, and all conditions are creates in the Park to serve this purpose."

The final decision over whether to resume the European Diploma for the National Park is expected in February next year. During this time the experts continue to monitor the changes in the National Park.
