Belovezhskaya Pushcha is preparing for the 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference
On September 5 and 6, 2008, the 3rd International Scientific and Practical Conference "The ecological and economic mechanism of conservation of biological diversity of especially protected territories will be held in the Nature Protection Institution "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha".
The basic purpose of this meeting is to discuss topical problems of the economy and ecology of functioning of especially protected natural territories and to accept concrete decisions on development and conservation of fauna and flora.
About 30 scientists from Belarus, Russia and Ukraine will share their experience in the field of development and conservation of biodiversity of the protected territories.
Dmitriy Bernatskiy, deputy director on science of the NPI "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha", has told that during the conference the mechanisms of financing of the national parks in the different countries will be considered and new approaches of the management of especially protected territories will be discussed. Experts will give special attention to classical ecological approaches to conserve biodiversity and to maintain the sustainable balance in the ecosystems as whole.

The opening of the conference is scheduled on September 5, 2008, at 9.00 AM.

In 2008, an additional Br38.4 billion was provided for environment protection measures in Belarus
In 2008, an additional Br38.4 billion was provided for environment protection measures in Belarus. This sum was made up by the profit surplus gained by the environment protection fund in 2007 and the money that was not used during the previous year. On August 26, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed Decree No 447 on the distribution of the money of the fund, BelTA learnt from the presidential press service.
The money is allocated for the construction of electroplanting industries sewage disposal, the construction and reconstruction of wastewater treatment, the measures to prevent the harmful affect of waste on the environment and the purchase of special machinery and equipment for collecting, loading and processing of waste used as secondary raw material.
Money will also be provided for the measures to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere by industrial enterprises of Polotsk and Novopolotsk, to elaborate management plans for Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park
and Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve, to complete work at the newsprint and wood-sawing mill in Shklov and to carry out other environment protection measures including the ones stipulated in the state investment programme for 2008.

Ecological monitoring on the basis of satellite data to launch in Belovezhskaya Pushcha in 2009
August 26, Minsk /Olga Belyavskaya - BelTA/. A new geographic information system to monitor and to manage ecosystems in the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" will be starting to apply in 2009. The novelty is developed by experts of the Research-and-Production National Unitary Enterprise "KosmosAeroGeologia", Ivan Tyashkevich, head of the Department of Geodynamic Monitoring and Natural Resource Researches of the enterprise has informed to the BelTA reporter.
The new geo-information system will allow improving methods of supervision over natural complexes of Belovezhskaya Pushcha, providing monitoring even for forest sites of the National Park difficult of access and on-the-fly assessing harm which can be put to the forest stands by strong winds and hurricanes. The experts can analyze with the help of the novelty all changes in the ecosystems of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and can overall information about flora of the National Park including species composition, age structure and density of its woodlands. "The use of the geo-information system will also give an opportunity to reveal ill trees in the forest stands", the expert has told. "These researches will be carried out by using spectral zonal satellite photography".
The study of the forest fund of Belovezhskaya Pushcha will be carried out on the basis of space photography of a high quality, their thematic processing and decoding with use of the newest geo-information technologies. Earlier the supervision over natural objects of Belovezhskaya Pushcha was carried out by using air-photography. "Space geological methods of researches will appreciably expand opportunities to investigate the natural environment of the National Park and will help more precisely to establish patterns and interrelation of on-going natural processes", the interlocutor has added.
Belovezhskaya Pushcha is one of the oldest reserves all over the world. In 1992, Belovezhskaya Pushcha was recognized a UNESCO's World Heritage Site and in 1998 it was given a status of an International Key Ornithological Territory of worldwide importance. The National Park's north to south width is over 60 km.
The "KosmosAeroGeologia" was created in 1966 on the basis of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Today the enterprise is a part of the Department on Geology. Experts the enterprise "KosmosAeroGeologia" develop aerospace remotely sensing methods to monitor the Earth and, together with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Protection and the Ministry of Forestry, carry out researches on assessment of the natural conditions of the forest vegetation and radiation pollution of different territories.

By bicycles to Belarus
One of the basic purposes of the International Bicycle-Run "Solidarity with Belarus" is to popularize natural values and Belarusian regional culture to use them for development of tourism.
The first group of participants including those from Great Britain, France, Belgium and Holland has left today the Polish village of Bialowieza to come to Belarus. 30 people take part in the Bicycle-Run. They will go about one thousand kilometers as three stages to late August.
The way partly pusses following green routs (so-called green ways) through Belovezhskaya Pushcha, the valley of Nemam River, the Berezenski Biosphere Reserve with its unique marshes and peat bogs, and also through the area of Rosson Lakes.
The overall way is divided into some stages. A piece of each stage should be overcome not only going by bicycles but also paddling canoes. During the way the participants will have meetings with locals and will learn local traditions, history and legends.
The participants plan to draw up project proposals about how to us natural values and the Belarusian region culture to develop tourism which will be managed by rural tourist associations, not by governmental institutions, the PAP reports about it.

A Bicycle-Run and a lack of good roads
The next stage of the International Bicycle-Run "Solidarity with Belarus" will start the 1st of August in the Brest region.
Foreign participants of the Bicycle-Run including noun persons from Great Britain, Holland and France have crossed the Belarusian and Polish border in the area of Belovezhskaya Pushcha
that to continue a journey across the Brest region lasting for a few days. Their route will go following so-called "green corridor" and passing the night in rural houses. The owner's party has prepared a cultural and educational program to the tourists. A folk group will present ceremonial songs for them in the farmstead "Mlynok" and the tourists will have "machine-operator" dinner in an apple garden of the agricultural enterprise "Ostromechevo". And the Great Culinary Festival in Motola of the Ivanov district which is scheduled on the 10 of August should become the core of the program. The Bicycle-Run is planed for three stages. Foreign participants will be changed in the team after each stage.
