Renovation and modernization of zoo enclosures with wild animals in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, 2008 – 2009

Events, facts, documents and evidence: The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha" has zoo enclosures where wild animals live – bison, deer, wild boars, elks, tarpan-leke horses, bears, wolfs and some other small mammals, and ān eagle owl (of birds). The enclosures make a daisy-chain structure of small-sized areas fenced with a metal wire netting and the animals live within their limits. An asphalt path along the enclosures is used by tourists to walk and look at the inhabitants of Belovezhskaya Pushcha. The length of the enclosures is approximately 1 kilometer.

The photos below show the zoo entrance, the inside area and some species of fauna.

The basic elements of the enclosures were rather old. Although the wire netting blocks have partially been changed from the front about ten years ago, in whole their outward appearance did not meet the modern standards and gave rise to unfavourable criticism from both experts and visitors.

The plan of preparations for the 600th anniversary of Belovezhskaya Pushcha's nature protection provided for major repair and modernization of the zoo enclosures and service facilities.

The rapier started in autumn of 2008. Basic works were focused on replacement of old concrete elements and the wire netting fence of the enclosures.

The photos below show basic works on reconstruction of the enclosures.

In closing the topic, let give some words about planning and economy. On the page "Destruction of fences in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, 2005" it was described in detail about how in 2001 and 2002 the bulky wood fence of good quality was constructed around the enclosures. The fence like that was never before at this area. A big volume of perfect wood and much money were spent to build it. Time has confirmed that the expediency of construction of the that fence was absolutely far-fetched and senseless. Therefore, 5 years later the opposite decision was accepted to demolish and to dump the fence necessary for nobody, by then already being turned to black. It was removed at the front of the zoo enclosures where tourists are usually walking. It was left from the backside and from the side right up till today. And it was finally dismantled and dumped in 2009, only during the reconstruction works.
This case is one of the examples which obviously testifies to a low level of the economic planning in the National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha".
