Building and renovation of roads in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, 2005 2009

Events, facts, documents and evidence: A ramified and well advanced net of roads exists in Belovezhskaya Pushcha for a long time. It basically coincides with a forest compartment net. Central roads have been asphalted in the 70-s to 80-s. The others remained to be gravel-covered. Big works on asphalting and renovation of the roads have been conducted by late 2010-s in connection with the celebration of the 600th anniversary of protection of Belovezhskaya Pushcha.

The problem regarding roads in Belovezhskaya Pushcha is not easy. It has both positive and negative sides.

On the one hand, effective protection, tourism and management are impossible without roads. The asphalting of roads enhances the efficiency of use of vehicles, and reduces the car fuel's consumption and exhaust gases' emission. On the other hand, the flow of cars and the quantity of tourists simultaneously are growing that, hence, it provokes the transport and anthropogenic pressure to the forest ecosystems on the increase. The asphalt coat is a source of chemical pollution for areas surrounded.

The solution of this dilemma is to asphalt only those roads which are vitally necessary for the effective functioning of the infrastructure and for achievement of basic tasks of the national park. The other part is in regulation of the cars' flow according to scientifically grounded levels of the allowable anthropogenic pressure to protected ecosystems of Belovezhskaya Pushcha. As far as it is known such calculations today are absent in the national park.

The shots below show central roads with a good asphalted cover which today are also used as tourist routes.

These shots show a renovated road from the tourist center to the ponds Plyanta. The length of the road is about one and half kilometer. The road has a little been extended sideways and has been covered with sand and gravel. It is still without the asphalt coat.
