November 28, 2002 «Sovetskaya Belorussiya» (The Soviet Byelorussia) Newspaper, #270 Pushcha will become bigger

Probably Belovezhskaya Pushcha will become bigger soon. It is planned to add 25 thousands hectares of collective farm land.

It should be noticed that this land is owned by different structures but belongs to protective zone of the National Park. This decision will help to regulate the forest management. Managers of the National Park «Belovezhskaya Pushcha» sent the proposal to administration of the President's Property Management Department.

They also says that there is another important reason why the land is going to be added to the Park. It is the buffer zone of the park where animals go to get food. And absence of a common guard on this land leads to poaching.

The so-called «lands commonwealth» would let to organize good food base and security for animals in the Park and to make water storage reservoirs to change to the best the hydrological regime in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Ground water level was lowered in 60-th and spruce forests began to dry up. In other words the suggestion of the Park staff is vital for the natural reserve now.
