April 23, 2008 "Vecherniy Brest" (The Evening Brest) newspaper A pertinacious wild boar?

The locals of the village of Sedruzh of the Kamenetz area are a bit panic-stricken. A wild boar lately began to come close to their houses too very often. And visits of this animal to a local farm are already usual. It frightens horses and pesters other home animals. However, the most warring is that the children have to walk to the nearest bus stop across the forest. It's unknown concerning behaviour of the wild animal. Perhaps, will someone take security measures?
Valentina Semenovna, a villager of Sedruzh.

Vladimir Ryadkov, a head of the Kamenetz District Inspection of Natural Resources and Environment Protection:

- Basically, this is the territory of Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the occurrence of wild animals should not be amazing for the local population. As to the wild boar, it is usually tries to disappear when the people are coming.

However, if the animal is really so "pertinacious" in the village of Sedruzh, I will give the order to our hunters to monitor this situation.

April 18, 2008 Website "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha"" Bird of the Year in Belovezhskaya Pushcha

This year the NGO “Akhova Ptushak Batskaushchyny” (BirdLife Belarus) has chosen Great Egret (Egretta alba) as a bird of the year. This choice of the preservationists of birds wasn’t random.

Regardless the fact that this specie in included into the Red Book and its population increases, there are many problems considering protection of great egrets in the country. The main is the fact that egret eats fish at the ponds of fish farms, where this specie is considered to be "undesirable". That is why it is hunted by the hunters. The other aspect of saving of great egret is that this specie is very shy and during the nesting just a simple visit of colony can result in leaving of nest by the bird.

In the past great egret suffered persecutions: at the end of the 19th century because of the beautiful open feather – “aigrette”, which growth at the back of male in the mating season. It was used for decoration of women’s hats. Due to the whims of women of fashion they were extirpated at the whole range. Poor males were suffered because of whims of women and population of great egrets continue to decrease.

Having vagaries of fashion haven’t pass into nothingness, when new problem appeared. During the third decade of the XX century high-scale use of pesticide have been started in the flood plains of steppe rivers, where great egret lived. The aim of use of pesticides was to destroy centres of breeding of migratory locust. That is why different agents were tried and used (copper acetoarsenite, natrium arsenite etc.) were used – they were sprayed by aviation over reedstands. An impact of these chemical poisons on birds hasn’t been studied, but their high toxic properties let us suppose mass mortality of all inhabitants of flood plains. As like as not that quick synchronous decrease of population of great egrets, spoonbills, glossy ibises and mute swan was caused by the used of chemical poisons. Also some duck species were damaged by the pesticides - those which nesting area are located in the floodplains of rivers of south.

Only at the end of the XX century great egret has started to appear in Belarus, but seldom. Belovezhskaya Pushcha was among the visited territories. The previous times it was very rare specie here and only sometimes came to the water reservoirs of Pushcha. The first 5 beautiful birds have been observed at "Lyadskoye" water reservoir the 15th of August, 1979. Two more egrets were seen 8-9 of August 1983 and one more great egret was seen 14 of August 1984 at the same pond.

Starting from the year 1994 the bird specie has started to come to the water reservoirs of Pushcha annually, so visitors of Pushcha were delighted. In 1997 great egret were breeding in Belarus the first time – at the territory of state biological reserve "Srednyaya Pripyat”. And it became a regular visitor of Belovezhskaya Pushcha in August. Its population increased in the summer time year by year. Not only single birds but small flocks of birds were flying over the ponds, the number of birds in which sometimes reached 30.

This year, devoted by naturalists to the great egret, has started with sensation in the National Park. One bird was seen not far away from Belavezhskaya Pushcha on the river Lyesnaya in the winter time. But special happiness and delight was caused by the coming of pair of the birds at Lyatskiya water pond early in the spring. Ornithologists hope that wonderful birds, probably, will breed in the National Park

April 08, 2008 Website "The National Park "Belovezhskaya Pushcha"" The spring has come!

The spring has come to Belovezhskaya Pushcha. After big snowfall of short duration in late March, the real spring has visited us. Right after snowdrops, hazels and alders, some bushes has adorned themselves with softly pink-lilac inflorescences.

Among last year's withered last leafs, short hepatica stalks and white-colour "slim-legged" anemones have shined through the forest litter. Green iris leafs have appeared from a pond.

First flowers are always long-awaited. They give pleasure and spring mood to us. Scientific employees of the National Park have hurried to monitor how nature is awaking in the forest. They have also made these pictures during the first days of April.
